202nd Flight Club at the Hangar at Fort Edwards
The portable facilities at Fort Edwards include a hangar large enough to build a Zenith CH750 SD LSA aka Skyjeep. The Skyjeep can be bought and built in sections and then used as a club plane.
Homebuilt Light Sport Aircraft (E-LSA or E-AB) can be used in flying clubs, provided they are not used for “compensation or hire,” such as renting to non-members or for-profit flight training (unless a LODA is held). Clubs must operate as non-profit social organizations, ensuring strict adherence to operating limitations.
Key Legal and Operational Requirements for Club Homebuilts:
- Definition & Regulations: Experimental Light Sport Aircraft (E-LSA) must meet specific FAA weight and speed limitations (1,320 lbs max takeoff weight, 120 knots max cruise).
- No Commercial Use: Homebuilt aircraft (E-AB/E-LSA) cannot be leased or rented out, as this is considered “compensation or hire.” Flying club members can share costs, but for-profit renting or using the plane for training with a CFI usually requires a Letter of Deviation Authority (LODA).
- Maintenance & Inspections: E-LSA owners can take a 2-day course to receive a Light Sport Repairman Inspection (LSRI) certificate, allowing them to perform their own annual condition inspections, saving on maintenance costs.
- Club Structure: The club should be a non-profit entity. If the club owns the aircraft, members own a share, which is generally acceptable for experimental use, provided it is not for profit.
- MOSAIC (Upcoming): The FAA’s Modernization of Special Airworthiness Certification (MOSAIC) rule will allow higher weight, higher performance experimental planes to be used for flight training, broadening what qualifies as LSA
Flight Training Clubs
The 202nd Aviation Support Bn Flight Club is a Flight Training Club, like the Ranger Training Clubs. Ranger and Flight Clubs make a 5% club commission on any sales through the Fort Edwards PX catalogs or at 202nd club events. Club commissions pay for or subsidize, club insurance and operating expenses.
